Mesilla Apple Orchard

 Early October we drove about forty minutes north to New Mexico to visit a Mesilla Apple Orchard.

They gave us apple picking supplies (buckets, bags, and an apple picker arm), pointed us in the right direction, and we went to pick as many apples as we wanted!

There were two different kinds of apples- one bigger good for baking and the other smaller and sweeter good eaten raw but turns out both apples are good for snacking.

We really had a blast picking our apples.  Here Andrew is proud of the perfect apple he found.

By the time we were working for awhile, it really warmed up and we didn't need so many layers.  It was a beautiful day.

It was later in the season and many of the best apples were already picked but we searched many trees and were able to fill our buckets.

The picker arm came in handy to get the hard to reach apples!

We crossed the bridge and headed back down the road to the barn to return our supplies and pay for our harvest.

We asked the owner if she had any recommendations of favorite local restaurants so we could have lunch before driving back home and she suggested la Posta in Historic downtown.  This courtyard in the picture reminded us of Mexico and of the movie Coco.

Apparently Billy the Kid was jailed across from La Posta in the courthouse, Ulysses S. Grant stopped at La Posta overnight while riding the Stage Coach and so did Kit Carson!

Apart from the historic significance, La Posta has an amazing courtyard and is decorated above and beyond.

There were even piranhas and parrots in the waiting area.

Later on that evening we had family movie night and watched Coco and snacked on our fresh apples.

Rachel made a pie from a recipe given to us by the Apple Orchard owner and it turned out super scrumptious!  In addition to having many apples to eat as is, she made a big batch of applesauce from the apples and everyone gobbled that up as well.
